Pushbike Danger

Low speed bicycle crashes can badly injure一or even kill一children if they fall onto the
ends of the handlebars(车把).So a team of engineers is redesigning it to make it safer.
Kristy Arbogast,a bioengineer at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in
Pennsylvania, began the project with her colleagues. The cases they reviewed about
serious abdominal(腹部的)injuries in children in the past 30 years showed that more than
a third were caused by bicycle accidents."The task was to identify how the injuries occurred
and come up with some countermeasures."she says.
By interviewing the children and their parents,Arbogast and her team were able to
reconstruct many of the accidents and identified a common cause for serious injuries. They
discovered that most cases occur when children hit an obstacle at slow speed, causing
them to topple(摇摆)over. To maintain their balance the children turn the handlebars
through 90 degrees一but their momentum(冲力)forces them into the end of the
handlebars. The bike then falls over and the other end of the handlebars hits the ground,
pushing it into their abdomen(腹部).
The solution the group came up with is a handgrip(握柄)fitted with a spring and
damping(减速)system. The spring absorbs up to 50 per cent of the forces transmitted
(传递)through the handlebars in an impact. The group hopes to commercialize the device,
which should add only a few dollars to the cost of a bike."But our task has been one of
education because up until now, bicycle manufacturers were unaware of the problem."
says Arbogast.

Paragraph 3 mainly discusses
A:why the children and their parents were interviewed.
B:how serious abdominal injuries occur.
C:when the children turn the handlebars.
D:what stops bicycle accidents.

The Privileged Children

Life really should be one long journey of joy for children who are born with a world of wealth at their tiny feet. But experts on psychological research now believe that silver spoons can leave a bitter taste. If suicide statistics are a sign of happiness, then the rich are a miserable lot. Figures show that it is the rich who most often do away with themselves.
Dr. Robert Coles,an internationally famous doctor,is the world's top expert on the influence of money on children. He has written a well-received book on the subject,The Privileged Ones, and his research shows that too much money in the family can cause as many problems as too little."Ohviously there are certain advantages to being rich,"says the 53-year-old doctor,"such as better health, education and future work expectations. But most important is the quality of family life. Money can't buy love."
It can buy a lot of other things, though, and that's where the trouble starts.Rich kjds have so much to choose from that they often become confused.Their parents' over favoring can make them spoiled. They tend to travel more than other children, from home to home and country to country, which often makes them feel restless.

Today's rich parents perhaps have realized that their riches can be more of a burden than a favor to their children. So their priority is to ensure that their families are as rich in love as they are in money.

This article is written mainly to tell readers that_________.
A:the rich are more likely to do away with themselves
B:money can bring a lot of things, including love
C:life is always happy for children of rich parents
D:rich parents should realize what important in the family is love rather than money

Many children feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They be- lieve that their family members don-t know them as well as their friends. In large families, it is quite often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they can only go to their friends for some ideas.

It is very important for children to have one or more good friends.Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking on the phone with their friends. This communication is very important to children’s growth, because friends can discuss some-thing, but it's difficult to discuss it with family members. However, most parents like to choose friends for their children Some parents even don-t allow their children to meet their good friends.

According to the most recent research on parenting, caretakers tend to use three strategies for disciplining children.
Power includes the use of physical punishment such as spanking or the threat of physical punishment, but parents can also demonstrate power by taking away a privilege such as using the car, attending a sporting event,or in the case of a very young child, playing with a favorite toy.In spite of the fact that power strategies, especially severe physical punishment, can cause children to fear or even hate parents,it's surprising that power remains the strategy used most often in discipli-ning children. It's also worth noting that children who are harshly disciplined in this way tend to be hostile, defiant, and aggressive socially.
Second in popularity after power is the withholding of affection. This can take the form of re-fusal to communicate with a child, threatening to abandon or reject the child,or otherwise treating children as though they were unworthy of love .Interesting enough, children disciplined in this way appear on the surface to be very self-disciplined,even model children who are seldom in trouble, but underneath, these same children are generally very nervous, insecure and dependent others to approve of and guide their evaluation of behavior.
Finally, management techniques are employed for discipline .These begin with a set of rules that are clearly expressed at an age-appropriate level. To enforce the rules, parents use a combina- tion of praise and approval with explanation and reasoning, always referring back to the rules.
But regardless of the strategy, the behavior that has precipitated punishment should be clearly understood, and the consequences should be consistent. Key to any kind of discipline is a pattern of consistency so that children understand the relationship between the rules, their behavior, and the consequences.

According to the passage, parents generally use the following strategies to discipline their children except______.
A: power strategies
B: withholding of affection
C: praise
D: management techniques

答案:C

4._________
A:staring at
B:glancing at
C:looking
D:watching

答案:A
A项be worried about sth. 感到担心”;D项hopeful意为“有希望的”,与句意不符;而C选项be curious to sth.
“A项suppose to…意为“猜想”;B项occupy on sth. 感兴趣”,而D选项be absorb in sth.
考查固定搭配make use of sth.
故选A。
固定搭配take step to do sth.
B项passing与though搭配意为“穿越”;C项traveling 与though搭配意为“经过”;D项walking与though搭配意为“走过,草率地处理”;而A选项 go through意为“度过”,与句意相符。故选A。
