Interview with Allan Gray1. I was working for a multinational company in the early 1980s,and my brother asked me if I was interested in going into partnership with him to set up a language school.I'd always wanted to work for myself, and I was a bit fed up with working for someone else,so I said yes.Primarily, I wanted the freedom to make my own decisions,I wanted room to be creative, and also I wanted to be able to get the credit and keep the profits if we were successful.I was also happy to carry the can and take the blame if things went wrong. These things are not possible if you work as an employee in a large organization.2. I had to borrow money to help start the business, but we were lucky because we also had some outside capital to put into the business. These days it can be really hard to persuade banks to lend money to people who want to start a company,so we were fortunate .It was fairly easy to set up the business, because we had a very clear idea of what we wanted to do.The problem was,all our preconceptions(预想)about what it would be like to run a business were wrong. We made lots of mistakes, and we almost went bankrupt(破产的)at the beginning. At one point, we only had two students in the school.3. Far too long!We lost money for the first four years and,as I was saying,we nearly went out of business. It took quite a long time to start making profit. The best thing we did, though, was that we hired some really good people to work for us.In fact, some of those people are still work-ing for us,24 years later. Now we're doing well, but it was very risky at first.4. One is financial constraint(约束).It can be very tough. I think all small businesses have cashflow problems-it often takes a long time to get paid by your customers. The second big prob- lem is marketing. It takes a lot of funds to market your business, and you have to get your name known and build a reputation .But the biggest challenge is managing the people. All businesses are about people, and you have to learn how to deal with all kinds of people-and I think we've been extremely good at getting the best of our staff. Paragraph 3______A:.Strategies in expanding a small businessB: Right people to run a businessC: Time-consuming experience of being successfulD: Challenges of running a businessE: Difficulties in starting the businessF: Reasons for working for oneself答案:C解析:本段主要讲述作者答应哥哥合伙创建语言学校并为自己工作的种种原因。 根据第一段的“I was also happy to carry the can and take the blame if things went wrong.” 根据第二段“These days it can be really hard to persuade banks to lend money to people who want to start a company...”

What should you think about in trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metal work or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills.
If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it.
If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job. Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is bitter to face any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
The writer thinks that for a student 'to have a part-time job is probablyA.a waste of time that could have been spent on study
B.useful for his future work
C.a good way to earn extra money
D.a good way to find out his weak points答案:B解析:本文的第三段说的是兼职工作能教给人哪些素质,以及它能让人认识到自己对什么职业感兴趣。

Rockets in the SkyIf someone asked you,"What color is the sky?"I expect that you would answer,"Blue."I am afraid that you would be wrong. The sky has no color. When we see blue,we are looking at blue sunlight. The sunlight is shining on little bits of dust in the air.We know that there is air all around the world. We could not breathe without air.Airplanes could not fly without air. They need air to lift their wings.Airplanes cannot fly very high because as they go higher the air gets thinner. If we go far enough away from the earth,we find there is no air. What is the sky?The sky is space. In this space there is nothing except the sun,the moon and all the stars. Scientists have always wanted to know more about the other worlds in the space. They have looked at them through telescopes and in this way they have found out a great deal. The moon is about 384 ,000 kilometers away from the earth. An airplane cann't fly to the moon but there is a thing that can fly even when there is no air. This is rocket.I am sure that you are asking,"How does a rocket fly?"If you want to know, get a balloon and then blow it up until it is quite big.Do not tie up the neck of the balloon.Let go!The balloon will fly off through the air very quickly. The air inside the balloon tries to get out.It rushes out through the neck of the balloon and this pushes the balloon through the air.It does not need wings like an airplane. This is how a rocket works. It is not made of rubber(橡胶)like a balloon,of course. It is made of metal. The metal must not be heavy but it must be very strong. There is gas inside the rocket which is made very hot. When it rushes out of the end of the rocket, the rocket is pushed up into the air.Rockets can fly far out into space.Rockets with men inside them have already reached the moon.Several rockets, without men inside them, have been sent to other worlds much farther away. One day rockets may be able to go anywhere in the space.Which of the following statements about a rocket is NOT true?A:It can fly when there is no air.B:It can fly without wings.C:It is made of strong metal.D:It is propelled by burning gas inside it. 根据第二段第五句“Airplanes cannot fly very high because as they go higher the air gets thinner.” 根据第六段最后一句“When it rushes out of the end of the rocket , the rocket is pushed upinto the air.” C项中的“itsbottom”是第六段最后一句中的“the end of the rocket”的同义转换。
